Early modern history
The transition to the third major era in history, known as Early Modern history, is marked by the Old World opening up towards new horizons, and the discovery of new continents and civilizations on our planet Earth.
The great discoveries were certainly mind-openers. However, it needs to be noted that the use of oil lamps remained limited to the Middle East and Europe.
Early modern history encompasses the Age of Enlightenment, the18th century and its intellectual movement; its decline sets in with the French Revolution in 1789.
Shown below are 25 examples of oil lamps from the Early Modern era. Click on each lamp to enlarge the picture.
